Clare (Dent) Underwood

Amelia Clare (Dent) Underwood was born November 22, 1934, in St. James, Missouri to Raymond William and Ruth (Elmer) Dent. She grew up in Salem, Missouri and graduated with the class of 1952 from Salem High School. Clare furthered her education at the University of Missouri in Columbia, graduating in 1957. While at the University of Missouri, Clare met the love of her life, Raymond Vincent Underwood. They were united in marriage on December 30, 1961, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salem and shared fifty-seven years together before his passing in 2019. Clare and Raymond were blessed with two children: Dent and Ramona. Throughout her working career, Clare worked as a speech therapist in several school districts to include Georgia, St. Louis, Lee’s Summit, and Raytown. Clare started working for Salem R-80 in 1970 and retired in 1994 after twenty-four years of dedication. She continued to sub for several years following. Clare went above and beyond for her students and left a lasting impression on the lives of many. Clare liked watching sports, especially Mizzou, Cardinals baseball, and Chiefs football. Clare and Raymond enjoyed traveling the states together and attending family events. She loved creating photo albums of family and travel. Clare loved her family very much and cherished making memories with them. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. Clare never missed an opportunity to share a story about their accomplishments. Clare was a lifetime member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She had a servant’s heart serving others in every little way. She enjoyed giving to and helping with the food pantry and was part of the Alter and Rosary Society. Clare was a member of the Dent County Museum Board, Salem Housing Authority, Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, and the Missouri Retired Teachers Association. Clare entered eternal rest May 17, 2023, in Salem, Missouri at the age of eighty-eight years. Those left to cherish her memory are her loving children: Dr. R. Dent Underwood and wife Mary of St. Paul, MN and Ramona Baldwin of Warrensburg, MO; sister: Linda Scott and husband Fred of St. Louis, MO; brother: Thomas Dent and wife Roberta of St. Charles, MO; brothers-in-law: Don Underwood and George Underwood; grandchildren: Catherine Floeder and husband Vince, Paul Underwood, Elizabeth Willard and husband Jonathan, Margaret Mary Underwood, Anna Clare Baldwin, Sarah Underwood, Mary Grace Glunt and husband Don, Anne Marie Underwood, and Amelia Rose Baldwin; great-grandchildren: Victoria, Georgia, and Juliet; as well as several nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, other relatives, and dear friends. Preceding her in death are her beloved husband: Raymond Underwood Jr.; her parents; grandparents; an infant sister: Ruth Clare Dent; an infant half-sister; and an infant great-grandchild. Clare will be remembered for her kindness, caring spirit, and loving nature. Her infectious smile will never be forgotten. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her. Funeral Mass for Amelia Clare (Dent) Underwood was held Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at the Sacred Hearth Catholic Church with Father Antoney Jose Thundathil officiating. Serving as Pallbearers were Paul Underwood, Vincent Floeder, Jonathan Willard, and Don Glunt. Honorary Pallbearers were Tom Dent, Joe Dent, Fred Scott, Don Underwood, and George Underwood. Burial was in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Wilson Mortuary of Salem, Missouri. Memorial Contributions may be made in memory of Clare Underwood to Sacred Heart Southern Missions and left at Wilson Mortuary. Memorial Envelopes will be available.
