Helen "Lavean" (Schafer) Lough

Helen Lavean (Schafer) Lough was born July 20, 1930, in Darien, Missouri, to Charles and Catherine (Asbridge) Schafer. Lavean grew up in the Lower Parker community and attended school at Upper Parker, a one room schoolhouse. Lavean was united in marriage to the love of her life, Wayne Wilton Lough, on July 21, 1947, in Licking, Missouri. Lavean and Wayne shared seventy years building a life filled with love, loyalty, religion and dedication. They were blessed with five beautiful children: Janet, Pam, Greg, Cindy, and Brent. Lavean was a hard-working Schafer woman. Throughout the years, she worked at the radio station, Post Office, and was a cook at Montauk State Park. However, her primary role was being an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker. Lavean and Wayne loved to have fun together and truly enjoyed life to its fullest. Traveling, going to horse shows, and attending craft fairs were some of their favorite things to do. Lavean had a special bond with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her love was unconditional. She was a talented quilter and had a green thumb when it came to gardening, vegetables and flowers were her specialty. Lavean had enduring faith in Jesus Christ as her Savior and Lord, she was baptized at a young age at Jadwin Church of Christ. Lavean truly had a servant’s heart and spent many years in the nursery and teaching a Sunday School class. She cherished being part of the benevolence group, and any opportunity to help someone, she was front and center, especially with sewing and giving perms. Lavean was a longtime member of Salem Church of Christ. Lavean passed her eternal reward on August 18, 2024, in Salem, Missouri, at the age of ninety-four years. Those left behind to cherish her memory include her loving children: Janet Hasten and husband William of Salem, MO, Pam Moore of Springfield, MO, Greg Lough and wife Kathy of Salem, MO, Cindy Reading and husband Tim of Fort Worth, TX, and Brent Lough and wife Roxanne of Carbondale, CO; grandchildren: Aaron Hasten and wife Kristi, Janell Cyrus and husband Steve, Lance Hasten and wife Lori, Joshua Moore and wife Alicia, Jacob Moore and Gwen Vogler, Nichole Lough, Jamie Lough, Danielle Lair, Jessica Lucero and husband Eric, Benjamin Reading and wife Chelsie, Elsbeth Border and husband Dan, Jon Lough and wife Kara, Nic Lough and wife Autumn, Jesse Lough and wife Chrystal, and Shaeley Weldon and husband Devoris; twenty-five great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends. Preceding her in death was her loving husband: Wayne Lough; parents: Charles and Catherine Schafer; and all her siblings. Lavean lived a long, remarkable, full life. She was kindhearted, giving, happy, witty, loving, and strong willed. Her legacy will live on through the many lives she has touched. Funeral Services for Helen Lavean (Schafer) Lough were held Saturday, August 24, 2024, in the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel with Rick Pitchford officiating. Janell Hasten and Aaron Hasten shared special memories. Congregational singing was led by Kevin Prugh and songs selected were “There’s A Stirring”, “I Come To The Garden Alone”, and “When We All Get To Heaven”. Her great-granddaughters closed the service singing “You Are My Sunshine”. Serving as Pallbearers were Josh Moore, Jacob Moore, Nic Lough, Jon Lough, Jesse Lough, Lance Hasten, Brock Hasten, and Ben Reading. Honorary Pallbearers were Bill Hasten, Tim Reading, Steve Cyrus, Dan Border, and Eric Lucero. Burial was in the Jadwin Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Wilson Mortuary of Salem, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made in memory of Lavean Lough to Jadwin Cemetery, Alzheimer's Association, or the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association and left with Wilson Mortuary.
