Lucy Mae (Mead) Slater

Lucy Mae (Mead) Slater was born May 5, 1935, in Big Creek, Missouri. She was the youngest out of ten children born to Alpha E. and Mattie Mollie (Conway) Mead. Lucy had a close bond with her sisters and enjoyed dancing and singing together. On June 29, 1956, Lucy was united in marriage to the love of her life, Eldon Leroy Slater. They shared many precious memories together before his passing. Lucy and Eldon were blessed with five children Gary, Brenda, Danette, Denise, and Rhonda. Lucy was a natural caregiver at heart, and her kindness and dedication to others will never be forgotten. She worked as a housekeeper at the nursing home for many years and developed a close bond with several residents. Lucy was always willing to lend a helping hand and even cared for her mother until she passed. Lucy lived life focusing on her family. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. Lucy treasured the time they spent making memories together and loved talking to them on the phone. Lucy was known for enjoying the simple things in life. She liked being outdoors and enjoyed all that nature had to offer. She loved gardening and tending to her flower beds. Lucy departed this life May 12, 2023, in Salem, Missouri at the age of eighty-eight years. Those left behind to treasure her memory are her loving children: Gary Slater and wife Janell of Kansas, Brenda Schwartz of Salem, MO, Danette Gonyaw of Texas, and Denise Clements and husband Reggie of Alabama; grandchildren: Michael Martin, Matthew Schwartz, Rhonda Wofford and husband Cody, Nicholas Schwartz, Lucas Slater, Nathan Slater, Jordan Slater, Justin Slater, Christine Meeks, Steven Clements and wife Melissa, and Tiffany Gonyaw; many great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends. Preceding her in death, loving husband: Eldon Slater; daughter: Rhonda Sue Slater; parents: Alpha and Matti Mead; and all nine siblings. Lucy’s legacy of caring and compassion will live on through the countless lives she touched throughout her lifetime. She will be forever missed. Memorial Services for Lucy Mae (Mead) Slater were held Wednesday, May 24, 2023, in the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel with Pastor Chris Hendrix officiating. Song selections played were “Gathering Flowers For The Master’s Bouquet” and “Pretty Paper”. Burial was in the Boss Cemetery.
