Velma Athlene Craven

Velma Athlene (Schrader) Craven was born on November 24, 1925 in Spring Creek, Missouri to Herbert and Virgie (Wright) Schrader and departed this life on August 18, 2021 in Texas at the age of ninety-five years. Velma was united in marriage to Joel Alfred Craven on December 2, 1950 in Hardy, Arkansas and together shared fifty-five years of memories before his passing. Velma and Joel were blessed with one daughter, Velma Lorraine. In her early working years, Velma was employed with the International Shoe Factory. She was a valued employee and continued working until her and Joel got married and started a family. Velma was dedicated to her family and took great pride in raising her daughter and caring for her home. Velma loved animals, especially her dog, Lisa. She enjoyed reading westerns and playing Skipbo with her sister. Velma cherished her family and frequently took road trips to visit them. She treasured her granddaughter and great-grandchildren and loved her nieces and nephews. Making memories with her family was most important to her. She was a great storyteller and often shared about the days past. Velma was a woman of great faith and often found studying her Bible. She was a longtime member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. Velma leaves behind to cherish her memories, loving daughter: Velma “Lorraine” Engstrom and husband Gregory of Texas; granddaughter: Katie Miles and husband Rob; great-grandchildren: Savannah Lansford, Carrie Miles, and Will Miles; a host of beloved nieces and nephews; extended family and dear friends. Preceding her in death, husband: Joel Craven; parents: Herbert and Virgie; and sister: Vinita Edwards. Velma was a nice, kind, and fun person to be around. She will be forever missed by all who knew and loved her. Funeral Services for Velma Athlene (Schrader) Craven were held Saturday, August 28, 2021 in the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel with Pastor Lyndell Decker and Pastor Mark Johnson officiating. Congregational reading of Psalm 23 was done and special music was provided by The Mohler Family singing “In The Sweet By and By” and “Amazing Grace”. Serving as Pallbearers were Cody Ard, DeAndre Dodson, Justin Deason, Jack Kerr, James Mohler II, and Phillip Sanders. Honorary Pallbearers were Tom Ard, Robert Edwards, Max Edwards, Marion Dodson, and Richard Osa. Burial was in the Lake Springs Cemetery.
