Velma Darlene (Williams) Thompson

Velma Darlene (Williams) Thompson was born December 23, 1935, in Montauk, Missouri. She was one of six children born to James Marley and Maudie Esther (Hulsey) Williams. Velma grew up in Montauk and attended grade school at Upper Hepsoda, a one room schoolhouse. She graduated in 1953 from Licking High School. On February 11, 1959, Velma was united in marriage to the love of her life, Leon Dale Thompson, and to this union blessed with one son, Steven. Velma and Leon shared fifty-nine years of marriage and lasting memories until his passing July 10, 2018. Velma was a dedicated wife and loving mother. She devoted her life to caring for her home and raising her son. She was an excellent grandmother and adored her grandchildren. Velma spent countless hours following and supporting them at ball games and school functions. She was an amazing aunt and cherished spending time with her nieces and nephews. Velma loved her family deeply and spent a lot of time researching her family history. In her early years, she had a passion for reading. She later enjoyed cross stitching. Velma used her talent to make pillowcases and quilt blocks. She loved baseball and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals Fan. Velma was a lady of great faith and member of the Second Baptist Church in Salem, Missouri. She enjoyed working in the church kitchen and supporting her husband in his deacon ministry. Her faith, family, and friends were most important to her, and she treasured the memories they made together. Velma entered into eternal rest October 3, 2023, in Springfield, Missouri, at the age of eighty-seven years. Those left behind to cherish her memory include her loving son: Steven Thompson and wife Missy of Salem, MO; grandchildren: Dane Thompson and wife Joy, Brock Thompson, Kalyn Thompson, Nathan Pyle, and Regan Thompson; sister-in-law: Inos Williams; as well as several nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends. Preceding her in death include her husband: Leon Thompson; parents: James and Maudie Williams; brothers: Marley and Wayne Williams; and sisters: Lola Krepps, Mildred Schafer, and Eula Poor. Velma was beautiful inside and out. She truly was selfless, even with her strong, sometimes stubborn, personality. Velma was the center of her family’s world and the brightest part of their lives. She was a true gem and will be forever missed. Funeral Services for Velma Darlene (Williams) Thompson were held Saturday, October 7, 2023, in the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel with Pastor Larry Nash officiating. Song selections played were “Serenaded By Angels”, “Sitting at the Feet of Jesus”, “I Want to Stroll Over Heaven With You”, and “Go Rest High On that Mountain”. Serving as Pallbearers were Steven Thompson, Dane Thompson, Brock Thompson, Kalyn Thompson, Nathan Pyle, and Regan Thompson. Burial was in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
