Willard "Bill" Carl Burkman Jr

Willard “Bill” Carl Burkman Jr. was born February 2, 1947 in Abilene, Kansas to Willard Carl Sr. and Opal Fern (Miller) Burkman. He was raised in Salem, Missouri and graduated from Salem High School. After high school, Bill was drafted into the United States Army. Bill faithfully served his county during the Vietnam War. For his honorable service, he earned many decorations, medals, ribbons, and awards to include: National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/2 Bronze Service Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. Bill was united in marriage December 23, 1966 to his high school sweetheart, Verna Mae Taylor. They were best friends and enjoyed their marriage of fifty-seven years. Bill and Verna were blessed with two children: Ted and Brandy. Bill was an extremely hardworking man and a proud provider for his family. He worked at Cominco Mines for thirty-two years until they closed. Then he operated a wood working shop at Fort Leonard Wood for two years before starting his own business B&B Woodworks. Bill was a talented woodworker and took great pride in his cabinetry work. Bill liked spending time outdoors fishing and camping, especially at Montauk. He was an avid pool player and participated in many pool tournaments. Bill was a man of great faith and longtime member of New Harmony Church. He truly enjoyed attending Sunday School and Morning Worship. His faith and family were most important to him. Bill adored his grandchildren, treasured his great-grandchildren, and cherished making memories with his family. Bill entered into eternal rest February 26, 2023, surrounded by his loving family at his home in Salem, Missouri at the age of seventy-six years. He is survived by his loving wife: Verna Burkman of Salem, MO; son: Ted Burkman and wife Tess of Jerseyville, IL; daughter: Brandy Larimore and husband Jesse of Salem, MO; sisters: Carolyn Bailey and Bonnie Hanson; brother: Jimmy Burkman and wife Linda; grandchildren: Davan Burkman and wife Aggie, Nathan Burkman and wife Dylan, Sarah Molloy and boyfriend Ryan Zimmerman, Harper Larimore, Hadley Larimore, and Barrett Larimore; great-grandchildren: Izabel, Annora, Ariana, and Felix; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends. Preceding him in death were his parents: Willard Sr. and Opal Burkman and his sister: Diana Bergman. Bill was one of a kind and leaves behind a great legacy and lasting memories. He will be forever missed by those who loved him most. Memorial Services for Willard “Bill” Carl Burkman Jr. were held Friday, March 3, 2023 in the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel with Pastor Matt Milligan officiating. Song selections played were “One Pair of Hands”, “How Great Thou Art”, and “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus”. Military Honors was provided by the American Legion Post 99 and Missouri Honors Team.
