James Derrick Mason

September 12, 1963 - June 6, 2022

James Derrick Mason was born on September 12, 1963, in Fort Campbell, Kentucky to James Stanley and Doris June (Baum) Mason. Derrick grew up in Florissant, Missouri and graduated with the class of 1980 from McCluer High School. He furthered his education with Florissant Valley Community College obtaining several certificates. Derrick was a hard worker and enjoyed working with his hands. He worked for Harlan Construction for many years and was part of the Laborers’ Union. Derrick was known as a very talented and gifted drummer. His passion for drums began in high school and he played in several bands throughout the years. Derrick liked to spend time outdoors and barbecue. He focused on things he valued most, especially spending time with his family and friends. Derrick loved his niece and great-nephews and treasured watching them grow. He was a loving son, caring brother, and cherished uncle. Derrick departed this life on June 6, 2022 in St. Louis, Missouri at the age of fifty-eight years. He leaves behind his loving mother: Doris Mason of Florissant, MO; sister: Monica Slazinik and husband Norm of Caseyville, IL; niece: Andrea Yates and husband Brandon of Edwardsville, IL; great nephews: Donovan and Rhys; aunts: Brenda Thien and Sandra Curley; as well as several cousins, other relatives, and dear friends. Preceding him in death, father: James Stanley Mason; maternal grandparents: Wilburn and Alpha Baum; and paternal grandparents: Kenneth and Lola Mason. Derrick will be remembered always as a gentleman, a man of great faith, a man who loved well and who was well loved in return. His memory will live on in those who loved him most. Graveside Services for James Derrick Mason were held Thursday, June 9, 2022 at the North Lawn Cemetery with Pastor Chris Hendrix officiating.
