Raymond Vincent Underwood, Jr. was born October 5, 1928 in Independence, Missouri to R.V. Underwood, Sr. and Cynthia (Dold) Underwood and passed away July 9, 2019 in Salem, Missouri at the age of ninety years. Raymond was the first of three sons born to R.V. and Cynthia Underwood, Sr. He attended St. Ann's Grade School in Independence and De LaSalle Military Academy in Kansas City, MO. Raymond graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. He was a member of Delta Sigma Pi Business Fraternity and was President of the MU Chapter during his senior year. While at the University of Missouri, he met the love of his life, Clare Dent. They were united in marriage on December 30, 1961 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salem, Missouri and had two children: Dent and Ramona. Raymond spent three years on active duty with the U.S. Coast Guard and twenty-seven years in the Coast Guard Reserve; attaining the rank of Commander. His last assignment prior to retiring was as Commanding Officer of the St. Louis Port Security Unit. In 1967 Raymond was hired by Cominco American as Human Resource Manager of their Magmont Mining Operation near Bixby, MO. He retired from Cominco in 1990. Raymond was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, past president of the Salem R-80 School Board, and past member of the Missouri Blue Cross/Blue Shield Board. Preceding him in death were his parents, Raymond Underwood, Sr. and Cynthia Underwood. Raymond is survived by his loving wife: Clare Underwood of the home in Salem, Missouri; two children: Dr. R. Dent Underwood and wife Mary of St. Paul, MN and Ramona Baldwin of Warrensburg, MO; two brothers: Donald Underwood and wife Betty of Independence, MO and George Underwood and wife Dee of Lake Winnebago, MO; sister-in-law: Linda Scott and husband Frederick of Chesterfield, MO; brother-in-law: Thomas Dent and wife Roberta of St. Charles, MO; grandchildren: Catherine and husband Vince, Paul, Elizabeth and fiancé Jonathan, Margaret Mary, Anna Clare, Sarah, Mary Grace and fiancé Don, Anne Marie and Amelia Rose; and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews and friends. Raymond was a wonderful husband, devoted father, loving grandfather and caring brother. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him. Funeral Mass for Coast Guard Veteran Raymond V. Underwood Jr. was held Monday, July 15, 2019 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salem with Father Jose Antoney officiating. Music was provided by Catherine Dent and Lisa Wulff. Song selections were, "You Are Mine" and "Here I Am Lord". Serving as Servers were: Kayla Howard and Shawna Harris. Serving as Pallbearers were: Don Adamick, Richard Baker, Joe Adamick, Mark Weaver, Larry Adamick and Paul Dale. Burial was in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Military Honors provided by American Legion Post 99 of Salem. All arrangements were under the care and direction of Wilson Mortuary of Salem, Missouri.
