James "Joe" Joseph Hayes

James Joseph Hayes passed away on August 5, 2026, in Salem, Missouri, at the age of eighty-five. He was born on February 3, 1941, in Greeley, Missouri, to Earnest and Anna (Miner) Hayes. Joe grew up in Bunker, Missouri, and graduated from Bunker High School with the Class of 1958. On April 15, 1960, he married the love of his life, Darlene "Sue" Gray. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and hard work, raising two children, Denise and Dennis. Joe and Sue were blessed with nearly fifty-nine years of lasting memories before her passing on February 22, 2019. Joe began his working career in his father's sawmill before entering the mining industry. He helped dig the original mine shaft when the mines first opened and dedicated many years of service to the industry, retiring as a machinist. His strong work ethic and commitment were evident throughout his career. Outside of work, Joe enjoyed farming, gardening, traveling, hunting, and fishing. Some of his favorite places were Montauk, Lake of the Ozarks, and Bagnell Dam. More than anything, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the pride and joy of his life. He cherished spending time making memories with them and watching them grow. His faith was the foundation of his life. Joe was a devoted member of Second Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as a deacon. He was also an active member of the Salem Masonic Lodge, attaining the honor of Grand Commander in the Knights Templar. Joe will be remembered for his quick wit and playful sense of humor. He never met a stranger and always had a joke or story ready to brighten someone's day. His kindness, generosity, and genuine interest in others left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Joe is survived by his daughter: Denise Polk and husband Gary of Salem, MO; grandchildren: Derrick Hayes and Andrea Kennedy of Mountain Grove, MO, Vanessa Williams and husband Thomas of West Plains, MO, DeeAndra Thompson and husband Jordan of Salem, MO, Zachery Hayes of West Plains, MO, Whitney Polk of Springfield, MO, and Hayden Polk of Jefferson City, MO; sister: Ann Ritter of Rolla, MO; seven great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Preceding him in death were his beloved wife: Darlene “Sue” Hayes; son: Dennis Hayes; grandson: Christopher Polk; parents: Earnest and Anna (Miner) Hayes; siblings: Ray Hayes, Arzetta Smith and husband Stewart, Harry Hayes and wife Donna, and Clyde Hayes and wife Carol; and brother-in-law: Wilburn Ritter. Joe leaves behind a legacy of faith, dedication, laughter, and unwavering love for his family. His family was blessed by his example and will forever treasure the memories, stories, and love he shared so freely. Joe will be forever missed. Masonic Services by the Lodge and York Rite Commandery were held August 8, 2026, in the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Funeral Services followed with Clay Harper officiating. Serving as Pallbearers were Derrick Hayes, Zachery Hayes, Jordan Thompson, Hayden Polk, Thomas Williams, and Greg Conway. Burial was in the Crossville Cemetery. The family was served by Wilson Mortuary. Memorial Contributions may be made in memory of Joe to St. Jude Children’s Hospital and left with Wilson Mortuary. Memorial Envelopes will be available.
