Richard "Rick" Charles Day

Richard “Rick” Charles Day was born October 23, 1949, in Harrisburg, Illinois. He was raised by his grandparents: Clayborn and Rose Patton and growing up he shared a bond with his brothers, Roger and David. Rick graduated Harrisburg High School with the class of 1967 and didn’t hesitate to further his education. He received his bachelor's degree from SIU Carbondale and his master’s degree from Lincoln University. Rick met the love of his life, Sandra Lynn Schutt, while in college and on September 5, 1970, they were united in marriage. Together they built a life filled with cherished memories and unwavering support for each other. Rick and Sandy were blessed with two sons, Ryan and Ross, who in turn gave them three grandchildren, Abigail, Cameron, and Evelyn. Rick dedicated his life to education. He started his teaching career at the Green Forest R-II School District. In 1992, he became administrator until retiring in July of 2003. He was a great mentor to his students, always inspiring them to achieve their true potential, and encouraging them to accomplish their goals. He cherished reconnecting with former students, taking great joy in hearing about their successes. Rick had a unique ability to connect with everyone he met; he truly did not know a stranger. His warmth, kindness, and genuine interest in the lives of others made him a beloved figure in the community. Rick enjoyed playing golf with his buddies, and best friend Mike Ruble, at the Spring Creek Golf Club. He also enjoyed tending his garden and fishing with his wife and family at Montauk State Park. Most importantly, Rick loved his family. Nothing made him happier than spending time with his grandchildren. He was their biggest fan, always encouraging them to reach for the stars, and always lovingly teaching them the things they needed to know. Rick was a man of faith and member of the Salem Church of Christ. In his late 30’s he enjoyed singing along with his wife in a gospel group. He was a humble man, genuinely compassionate, and had a true servant’s heart. Rick entered into eternal rest October 12, 2024, in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, at the age of seventy-four years. Those left behind to treasure his memory include loving wife: Sandy Day of Salem, MO; sons: Ryan Day and wife Dawn of Jefferson City, MO and Ross Day and wife Stephanie of Prospect Heights, IL; brother: Roger Tarlton of Alton, IL; grandchildren: Abigail, Cameron, and Evelyn; as well as other relatives, and dear friends. Preceding him in death were his parents: Clayborn and Rose Patton; and brother: David Tarlton. Rick’s legacy of love, mentorship, and friendship will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be forever missed. Funeral Services for Richard “Rick” Charles Day were held Saturday, October 19, 2024, in the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel with Bro. Billy Miller officiating. Song selections played were “I’ll Fly Away”, “Scars In Heaven”, and “When I Get Carried Away”. Serving as Pallbearers were Ryan Day, Ross Day, Cameron Day, Matt Ruble, Rodney Spivey, and Dustin Whitehouse. Burial was in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Wilson Mortuary of Salem, Missouri. Memorial Contributions may be made in memory of Rick Day to the American Heart Association and left with Wilson Mortuary.
